Rosy Boas

Rosy Boas

(Lichanura trivirgata)

With their small size and gentle demeanor, Rosies are simple yet rewarding snakes to keep.

Enclosure Size:

For Rosy Boas the enclosure should be at least 36″ long or longer for large females. Most males and some small females can be housed in an enclosure 24” long.

Rosy Boas are primarily terrestrial and occasionally fossorial, so there is no need to worry about cage height, although it’s wise to utilize whatever height the habitat offers, they will climb occasionally if given the opportunity. Like all snakes they will escape if given the opportunity.

Temperature:

Though Rosies are fairly resilient to temperature irregularity; in order minimize stress it is best to offer them a large gradient with multiple hiding areas from which to choose.

Ideally:

Basking Spot Temperature: 93°F-95°F

Warm Side Ambient Temperature: 80°F-90°F

Cool Side Ambient Temperature: 70°F-75°F

Optional Night-time Ambient Drop: 68°F-72°F

Humidity:

Realistically you want to keep it as low as possible, ideally under 50%, an easy enough task during long dry Canadian winters.

This desert/ arid species is prone to respiratory infections when exposed to prolonged high levels of humidity. Substrates and decor that hold and promote humidity should be avoided. Those that follow however, work very well:

Dry, compact, sandy/ rocky soil

Rocks with numerous crevices and caves

Dead branches,

Aspen shavings and Aspen chips make a great choice! It will help to keep the relative humidity low and give your Rosy Boa a chance to burrow. It is our preferred choice for substrate. Hands down!

Feeding and Water Considerations:

Offer water a few times a week and avoid dishes that are large enough for the animals to soak in. they will remain sufficiently hydrated this way with no health issues.
